Cllr Ann Jackson, mayor of Tower Hamlets presented the trophies to the winners, and whether a serious elite runner, or running just for fun - the true winner was the Heart Cells Appeal with so far over £10,000 being raised. Keith Ross, Executive Head Chef at West Ham United, has just completed 950 miles cycling round all 20 premiership clubs in 12 days starting and finishing at West Ham United!!

Keith was joined on the ride by London Chest doctor Andrew Deaner who treated Keith in July 06 after he suffured a heart attack whilst out whith his family. Within 75 minutes of arrival at The london Chest, Keith was in the operating theatres where he received an angiogram followed by an angioplasty and thankfully the doctors have now confirmed there is no lasting damage to his heart. 'I am in no doubt that the decision of the paramedics to take me immediately to the London Chest Hospital certainly saved my life.' We would like to thank Alan Shorter Rochtford Cycles for the donation of bikes and kit and Newman Gym who have given Keith a free membership.

Flora London Marathon

“Ten runners, including doctors and relatives of patients, successfully completed this year’s London Marathon. Their efforts went beyond jogging the 26 mile course – much of it during persistent rain – because together they raised a fantastic £12,000 for the Heart Cells Appeal.

Cardiac Specialist Dr Michael Muhlmann holds the best time for our Marathon team. He sped round in an impressive 3 hours and 16 minutes to finish amongst the first 3,000 runners. Dr Muhlmann, 34, said: "This was my second marathon and I improved my time by about 20 minutes which was good. I found the first 20 odd miles fine but the last six were a real challenge. We had great support all the way round and that makes a big difference."

Our top female runner, Joanne Day, was one of the first 4,000 women runners. Joanne, 43, of South Ockendon in Essex, finished the race in a speedy 4hours and 26 minutes.

She said: "I loved every minute of it! I'd like to thank everyone who supported me on the day and helped me raise money for a really good cause."

Joanne chose to run for the hospital appeal after her step-dad Fred Hadley came through a successful quadruple heart bypass operation.

Tina Dixon, 46, of Stock in Essex, made it round in 5 hours and 34 minutes. Tina said: "It was a lovely day and the cheering crowds made you feel like a celebrity. That was my second marathon.” Tina's friend Nicki Lental, 36, also of Stock, completed the race in five hours forty minutes. The pair had decided to race for The London Chest Hospital after Tina's husband Colin had a successful heart valve operation.

Our thanks to all those who run in this year’s Marathon and to all those who gave so generously in sponsorship.

Movie premiere helps raise thousands of pounds for heart stem cell research

Over 200 people attended the European premiere of new Australian movie Little Fish in London last week in aid of the Heart Cells Foundation.

The event, which was held at the Curzon Cinema in Mayfair on Wednesday (19 October), raised thousands of pounds for ground-breaking heart stem cell research at Barts and The London NHS Trust.

Little Fish is about a woman who is struggling to leave her drug-addicted past behind her. The movie stars some of Australia’s best actors, including Cate Blanchett who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar earlier this year for her portrayal of Katherine Hepburn in the film The Aviator.

Founder of the Heart Cells Foundation Ian Rosenberg, who lives in St John's Wood, said: “Little Fish is a powerful movie about one woman’s struggle to turn her life around. We are grateful to the movie’s distributors for allowing us to host its European premiere. The event was a tremendous success, helping us to raise much-needed money for the ground-breaking heart stem cell trial at Barts and The London NHS Trust. I would like to thank everyone who came along.”

Over eleven hundred runners took part in the 15th annual London Chest Hospital’s 10 kilometre race in Victoria Park, Hackney on Sunday 31 July. Hundreds more ran in the 3 kilometre fun run and the under 13s one mile race. Money raised will go to the Heart Cells Foundation, the charity funding a ground-breaking patient trial at the hospital. The trial, which is expected to start shortly, will determine if stem cells in bone marrow can be used to treat heart disease. It is the first large-scale patient trial of its kind in the UK.

The fastest time in the 10km race was 33.09 minutes – run by William Clark of Glassworks running club. 10 year old Tomas Gold won the under 13s one mile race with a time of six minutes and 14 seconds and his eight year old sister Grace came third amongst the under 13 girls with a time of seven minutes and forty one seconds.

Organiser Pat Gray from The London Chest Hospital, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that we had so many runners this year. The popularity of this event just grows and grows and it is always a good day out for those who take part. We are very grateful the Victoria Park Harriers who help facilitate the event and also to Boulevard Catering and Wells Butchers – both of Hackney – for food provided on the day and to Bethnal Green estate agents Land & Co whose staff handed out water to the runners as they circuited the park.”
