Robert Newman
Getting my running shoes on to raise money!
‘I have set myself the challenge of running the Oxford Half Marathon and ask you to join me in supporting the Heart Cells Foundation.’
‘My name is Robert Newman and I am the son of a very extraordinary man called Barry Newman. I’m doing this run for the charity to say thank you for saving my dad’s life and bringing him back to be the person I knew before his illness. Beyond that I’m also doing it so this treatment is more readily available to people via the NHS so the lives of other people’s fathers, mothers and children can be saved and can give them a second chance at life’
‘We are delighted that Rob is running in aid of the Heart Cells Foundation, and we thank you for your support. It has been wonderful to see the progress Barry, his father, has made.’ Jenifer Rosenberg OBE
“My Dad and I have been racing karts since I was 8 years old. We started out with no clue about what we were doing, we just had a real love for racing and competing. Given the small budget we have worked with we have achieved great things, a lot and I would say we can certainly give anyone a run for their money!
This would have not been possible without the hard work and dedication of my Dad. He worked numerous jobs, silly hours and hasn’t bought any new clothes since 96! That is until around 8 years ago when he started feeling out of breath at work. He’s not the trimmest man but he is extremely fit and more importantly very stubborn. So when he was collapsing to his knees we knew something was wrong.
Over a 6-8 month period he was back and forth to the doctor with various diagnoses until they finally realised his heart had been severely damaged and was only working at around 13%. At this point he’d stopped working and would spend a lot of the day in bed. Over the next few years he tried various medication but was not getting any better.
Life was looking extremely bleak until he happened to see a segment on the BBC One Show about the charity Heart cells Foundation. They had helped people with the same illness my Dad – dilated cardiomyopathy.
A couple of months followed and he was accepted to be treated in the Compassionate Unit at Barts. The whole process went really smotthly and it almost seemed too good to be true. However, the results absolutely proved that it wasn’t. Almost instantly he was feeling better and as time has passed he has gone from strength to strength. 3 years on he’s back at work, building up his strength and enjoying life at 110%.
